FRAGRANCE AND COLOUR
Gardens of fragrance and colour – a sensory experience
A garden is much more than a green space, a tamed bit of nature that forms an extension of the home’s living spaces as well as a buffer between nature and the human zone. In additional to all this, which includes adding living space, providing a private open air zone and a green oasis of peace and privacy, a garden is also a source of visual beauty and inspiration.
Done properly, a crisp lawn and attractive terraces are merely focal points surrounded by a sea of colours and textures that can add so much to your home’s beauty and your quality of life. To this you can add further elements such as swimming pools, water features and special lighting, as well as gazebos, hot tubs, poolside bars and fire pits, but even a pure, minimalist garden with nothing but flowers, grass and trees can set the tone for your own little bit of paradise.
Add colour and fragrance to your home
A well-designed garden offers many different ways to enrich your home environment, from the wonderfully Spanish-Mediterranean scent given off by orange and lemon trees to the gorgeous blossom of almond and cherry trees. To this add the soft textures and gentle flowers of shrubs, where jasmine and other bushes bring fragrance and a wonderful array of colours to the home.
They produce a rich blend of tones, textures and shapes, working together to an idyllic effect that contrasts with the green of grass and the blue of the Andalusian sky. In the hands of skilled gardeners, it can add up to a floral orchestra of the senses. Herbs and succulent plants form the perfect accompaniment, creating a fantastic carpet of colour that covers what would otherwise be bare soil.
It’s a beautiful, practical way of creating a low-maintenance garden area made up of gorgeous colours and eye-catching forms. Lavender and rosemary are a wonderfully Mediterranean way of achieving this effect, and in addition to requiring little water and upkeep, these purple-toned plants add a perfect counterpoint to fresh, green lawns.
What’s more, the scent they give off is simply heavenly, and if you plant Dama de Noche (Night-blooming Jasmine), it not only blooms in the evenings but also helps to keep mosquitos away. Add rosemary, fennel, thyme, sage, lemongrass or indeed lavender, and the effect also includes wasps. If the problem persists, try lemon or cucumber peels, while basil, mint and once again rosemary are not popular with flies.
You see, your floral, herbal garden is not only beautiful and fragrant, it’s also very practical and convenient.
