Make your garden a private space

Your garden should be a private oasis; a place where the family can relax, entertain and enjoy fresh air in an ambience of natural beauty and wellbeing. Unfortunately, not all garden designs offer this from the outset, but virtually all have the potential to be converted or adapted into your very own space – and what’s more, you get to choose from a world of design options and ambiences.

The most obvious way to increase a sense of privacy in your garden is to create a physical barrier. The materials and designs available are many, including fences made from wood, stone and latticed frameworks upon which flowers and creepers can grow, as well as a great many different types of hedges and trees that will do the job just as well. All keep out inquisitive dogs, prying eyes and any views you’re not keen on, and they also create a sheltered environment in which you can feel at home and seek the kind of peace and solitude we sometimes need.

A trellis is therefore a very effective idea, as are arbours and pergolas, all of which should ideally be solid structures in natural materials such as wood, with flowering plants covering them for added shade, beauty and privacy. Also popular these days is camouflage style netting and shade sails, both very effective in keeping out the bright sunshine but don’t cut out as much as a fully covered terrace or garden area. For comfort, safety and easy maintenance, as well as durability in all kinds of weather, it is important that any structure of this kind is solidly constructed and placed.

 

 

Let your imagination wander

For inspiration you can look to ideas from around the world, and in this respect creating a Mediterranean-style patio environment produces a very private setting that is further enhanced with decorative tiles and the trickle of water features such as a little fountain. The latter helps to mask any outside noise and completes the Mediterranean feel.

Another wonderful option is to go the Zen route, and make your very own peaceful, contemplative corner of the world where wonderful Marbella views provide a backdrop for a welcoming area in which bamboo plants, reed fences or indeed Asian-style ponds block out the outside world in an atmosphere of pure serenity and peace.
