TIGHT BUDGET
Create an inspiring garden on a tight budget
Looking at inspiring examples of beautiful gardens we usually end up admiring those surrounding grand Marbella villas or palatial complexes. Indeed, many landscaped grounds are gorgeous albeit beyond the reach of most, but we’re here to tell you that while a large budget naturally doesn’t hurt at all, you don’t need one to create a wonderful natural space for yourself.
Firstly, bigger isn’t always better, so if your available space isn’t too large we can make that work too. The issue is being creative and making it fun – for you – not having to follow set prescripts of what is cool or trendy. If your space and budget are really tight, begin making your outdoor areas appealing by using potted plants, creepers, wind chimes, little fountain water features and also candles, fun lamps or solar-powered cube lights that add colour and ambience during the day and extend it into the evening.
When potting plants and flowers (please) don’t opt for plastic pots; add character as well as visual and textural charm by choosing pots in pretty glazed colours, or if they are too expensive then get the traditional terracotta ones and paint them yourself. Unless you’re truly unhandy they will come out lovely, be fun to create and have a hip chic charm about them that’s fun. Before you know it, your outdoor space will be full of atmosphere and provide a wonderful space in which to relax, enjoy the sun and meet up with friends on a balmy evening.
It’s also perfectly possible to recycle old wood, decorative items and even steel, fashion them into plant holders, tables and why not, artworks of your own. Some people even use old shoes to great effect, you just have to dare to have fun, and also be creative with colours. Important is that you know which plants, shrubs and trees suit your garden or terrace, the orientation, winds and available light, so that you don’t waste money on seeds and plants that won’t grow. Did you know that some plants repel insects and that having your own little vegetable garden produces not only fresh, healthy greens and fruit, but often also lovely flowering tones?
In areas with very little space, think of creepers or vertical gardens – they add natural greenery and a soothing ambience in urban settings.
